Costa Rica is a tropical paradise and The Red Palm Villas was my very own little luxurious piece of that paradise. I loved my wedding and wouldn’t change anything, but it was also stressful and more than a little chaotic. All I wanted to do afterwards was relax with my new husband and maybe enjoy some adventure activities once we had recovered a little. Our honeymoon at The Red Palm Villas was exactly what we needed – relaxation, a little adventure, and a lot of romantic alone time.
Costa Rica Honeymoon Day One: The Recovery
Walking into the serene beauty of The Red Palm Villas, all of the muscles that I had been tensing for the last two days began to relax. A sense of calm began to wash over me, simply by walking through the hotel’s lush gardens. Upon entering the our Costa Rican Honeymoon Villa, I felt like crying from the relief that flooded my body. The clean lines of the building, the unassuming luxury of the rooms, and the sunlight softly filtering through the leaves to illuminate the space – it was all so beautiful, and so relaxing. This was the perfect place to recover from a 500-person wedding.
Though the sumptuously comfortable bed called to us, my husband and I decided that we couldn’t spend our first hours in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica inside. So, we donned our suits and headed out to the private beach for some good old fashioned R&R. Once I had laid out my beach towel, I took a look around. I felt like I was on a set of a movie the beach was so gorgeous. The brilliant blue of the sky melted into the deep blue of the sea so that it was hard to determine exactly where the horizon lay. The perfectly-formed waves rhythmically crashed onto the white sand of the beach, creating a bass for the chirping of the birds hidden within the emerald green jungle that came right up to meet the sand. It was all so incredible, but the soothing natural sounds and the sun’s delightful warmth quickly lulled me to sleep.
After a refreshing soak in the Honeymoon Villa’s extraordinary shower decorated with a Guadi-like mosaic, I joined my husband on the porch to watch the sun set into the ocean. Since all we wanted was to spend a quiet night together without any distractions, we had The Red Palm Villas chef cook a delicious meal for us right in our villa. The meal, the setting, the company – it was all just completely divine.
Costa Rica Honeymoon Day Two: Embracing Relaxation
Waking up to the sounds of tropical birds is so much more pleasant than the sounds of an alarm. And stepping out of the bedroom into a perfectly designed great room for a private yoga session is even better. The day before had been a nice way to decompress, but today I wanted to find my center and embrace utter relaxation. Side by side, my husband I stretched out our bodies and felt the strength flowing into our limbs, the yoga instructor guiding us back to feeling human again.
Rejuvenated after a morning of yoga, we walked over to the hotel next door where we enjoyed a delightful brunch of succulent tropical fruits, fresh vegetable juice, and made-to-order omelets. It was one of those perfect meals that fills you up and delights your taste buds, but doesn’t leave you with that sluggish, heavy feeling. The day was beautiful and clear, so we went for a nice stroll on the beach before heading back to our villa for our afternoon couples massage.
By the end of the day, I felt like a new woman. The yoga and massage had managed to work out all of the kinks brought on by wedding stress. The deliciously flavorful food that managed to be light and filling at the same time had fed my soul as well as my stomach. And simply being in such a beautiful place had awakened my senses. I felt relaxed, but I also felt alive.
Costa Rica Honeymoon Day Three: Discovering the Romance
After another private morning yoga session and sumptuous breakfast, my husband and I decided to explore the area a little bit. We rented bicycles, grabbed some food for a picnic lunch, and off we went. Pretty soon we found a secluded spot on the beach where we set up our picnic. Acting like romantic fools, we stuffed ourselves with bread and cheese and fed each other mangos sweeter than any we had tasted before. Then, after a well-deserved short nap, we dove into the cool, clear waves of the Pacific Ocean. Before hoping back onto the bikes, we lay out in the sun, letting the warm rays and the cool breeze dry the moisture from our skin.
That evening we went on another type of ride, this time on horseback. I cannot think of anything more romantic than riding a horse on the beach at sunset with your newly-betrothed. I felt like the leading lady of some epic romance as I galloped beside my husband, the horses’ hooves splashing through the surf. The sunset was the most spectacular yet. The entire sky was a bright pink, broken only by streaks of orange and red clouds. The water took on a golden color and the white sand became a soft pink. I don’t think that I will ever forget the intense and unexpected beauty of that ride.
Costa Rica Honeymoon Day Four: Embarking on an Adventure
Today, we decided, it was time to spice things up with a little adventure. Forgoing our morning yoga session, we instead headed out to the beach for a private surf lesson. Neither of us had ever gone surfing before, but within two hours we were both catching waves. Granted, they weren’t exactly big swells, but they were big enough for me. And what a rush! I never imagined how fun and rewarding it would be ride a wave into shore. I couldn’t help but squeal with delight every time I stood up on my board as it rose in the air on top of a crest of water.
But the thrills to be had in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica are not just found on the water. That afternoon my husband and I headed inland to experience what is probably one of the most quintessential Costa Rican experiences – a canopy tour. The thrill of riding through the air on a zipline is electrifying. Whizzing past monkeys and parrots and other animals that inhabit the rainforest’s canopy makes it one of the most dazzlingly unique adventures that I have ever experienced. At the end of the line, visitors are free to soak in the pool at the bottom of a majestic waterfall. I never knew that the jungle could be so exhilarating and romantic all at once!
I wish that I could have stayed at The Red Palm Villas for forever, but even the most wonderful of vacations must come to an end. I arrived in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica stressed out and exhausted, but I left in a state of complete relaxation and bliss. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect honeymoon.
