Everyone knows Costa Rica is a surfers paradise with 2 coastlines pumping non stop surf from intermediate to expert throughout the year.
From Puerto Viejo to Pavonnes, Dominical, Jaco, Mal Pais, Santa Teresa, Camonoreal, Tamarindo, Witches Rock and Ollie’s Point, Costa Rica boasts a wide range of world class surfing spots.
It’s no secret that on the Nicoya Peninsula in the pacific, north of Franks Place Mal Pais, south of Flor Blanca and Milarepa resorts, nestled in the shade of a private almond grove, on the point, sits Red Palm Villa’s estate, literally front and center of the famous Santa Teresa point break known worldwide as Suck Rock.
When the surf is big to huge, 25 foot faces, this is the place to come watch or, surf it if your level is this high. It’s like Extreme Wide World of Sports Surfing right out front.
From Mal Pais to Santa Teresa and further on to Playa Hermosa there are about 15 main beach breaks and hundreds of different peaks, all in an 8 mile area. There are some better known point breaks but none compare to Suck Rock when the swell is really firing.
Suck Rock sits on the point just south of Pinon in northern Santa Teresa. When it’s really big there is an outer reef which breaks about 500 meters out from “Sucky”. When everything is firing you can ride a wave from Outer Reef through Mimms Teats catching a spitting barrel through “Sucky” eventually hustling through the trough to pick up two more small but fast and juicy sections, another 150 meters, to 7 trees. Probably more than 700 meters total and a really good ride.
Since Santa Teresa and Mal Pais are so well known for the surf and for great surfers, it’s easy to see how the reputation for being the place to come for surf schools would be a natural.
Some of the best surf instruction in Central America have set up camp and made their headquarters here in Santa Teresa. Pura Vida Surf Tours operates and has their base camp here as well as about 6 other well staffed operators.
Many world class sports figures can be seen in the local lineups enjoying Pura Vida moments while sharing waves with locals. The locals love it, every once in a while they get to watch one of their all time great sports hero’s get humbled by a waste high wave.
Friendly to a fault, abundant, all levels, Santa Teresa offers everything for a perfect surf adventure vacation getaway.
